Description:
This book provides a comprehensive treatment of assignment problems from their conceptual beginnings in the 1920s through present-day theoretical, algorithmic, and practical developments. The authors have organized the book into 10 self-contained chapters to make it easy for readers to use the specific chapters of interest to them without having to read the book linearly. The topics covered include bipartite matching algorithms, linear assignment problems, quadratic assignment problems, multi-index assignment problems, and many variations of these problems. Exercises in the form of numerical examples provide readers with a method of self-study or students with homework problems, and an associated webpage offers applets that readers can use to execute some of the basic algorithms as well as links to computer codes that are available online. Audience: Assignment Problems is a useful tool for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students. Researchers will benefit from the detailed exposition of theory and algorithms related to assignment problems, including the basic linear sum assignment problem and its many variations. Practitioners will learn about practical applications of the methods, the performance of exact and heuristic algorithms, and software options. This book also can serve as a text for advanced courses in discrete mathematics, integer programming, combinatorial optimization, and algorithmic computer science. Contents: Preface; Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Theoretical Foundations; Chapter 3: Bipartite Matching Algorithms; Chapter 4: Linear Sum Assignment Problem; Chapter 5: Further Results on the Linear Sum Assignment Problem; Chapter 6: Other Types of Linear Assignment Problems; Chapter 7: Quadratic Assignment Problems: Formulations and Bounds; Chapter 8: Quadratic Assignment Problems: Algorithms; Chapter 9: Other Types of Quadratic Assignment Problems; Chapter 10: Multi-index Assignment Problems; Bibliography; Author Index; Subject Index

Description:
Infinitesimal analysis, once a synonym for calculus, is now viewed as a technique for studying the properties of an arbitrary mathematical object by discriminating between its standard and nonstandard constituents. Resurrected by A. Robinson in the early 1960's with the epithet 'nonstandard', infinitesimal analysis not only has revived the methods of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities, which go back to the very beginning of calculus, but also has suggested many powerful tools for research in every branch of modern mathematics. The book sets forth the basics of the theory, as well as the most recent applications in, for example, functional analysis, optimization, and harmonic analysis. The concentric style of exposition enables this work to serve as an elementary introduction to one of the most promising mathematical technologies, while revealing up-to-date methods of monadology and hyperapproximation. Audiences: This volume is intended for classical analyst seeking new powerful tools and to model theorist in search of challenging applications of nonstandard models. This is a companion volume to the earlier works on nonstandard methods of analysis by A.G. Kusraev and S.S. Kutateladze (1999), ISBN 0-7923-5921-6 and Nonstandard Analysis and Vector Lattices edited by S.S. Kutateladze (2000), ISBN 0-7923-6619-0

Description:
From Publishers Weekly While individually they're not the longest nor the best-remembered wars, conflicts with Native Americans, like the Iroquois-Huron War and the Seminole Wars, make up most of American military engagements. This becomes clear in popular historian Alan Axelrod's America's Wars, a reference guide to all the armed struggles of the United States. Major wars are outlined battle by battle, and Axelrod also describes the development of smaller campaigns like the 1846 Bear Flag Rebellion over control of California, the Philippine Insurrection and the recent engagements in Somalia and Kosovo. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Most Americans believe that they can count on two hands the number of wars their country has witnessed. But historians know differently. The author of more than 50 books, Axelrod has written a comprehensive guide to the wars that took place in North America or involved the United States. Beginning with colonial wars fought before 1754 and ending with the Kosovo crisis of three years ago, the author presents a summary of each conflict. The American Revolution, Civil War, and World War II merit the longest entries, with sidebars featuring portions of letters, diaries, and orders written by soldiers. Each entry is clear enough to stand on its own, but the entire book reads as a flowing narrative. Axelrod does not explain what qualifies a conflict to be included in this book, but it is clear that a riot is not within its scope. This encyclopedic approach is recommended for public libraries as a useful reference book and academic libraries as a good starting point for student research. Grant A.
